5 stars for being a un-put-downable page-turner, full of interesting and engaging characters I empathized with, and for teaching me about the politics and religion of the middle ages. Follet is a thriller writer, and it shows.

BLAH! I hated this book. Sorry if I offend the hordes of reviewers who loved it, but for the sake of honesty, here goes. Spoiler alert!
There were two types of characters (good guys and bad guys) and their actions and fates were sooo predictable that it really became laughable. For instance, the character Will Hamleigh was ridiculous - to me he seemed like a grotesque caricature of a villain and I just couldn't take him seriously. Compulsively readable, but with mostly flat characters and an odd world view in which evil characters only have violent sex, good characters always have great sex, and priests don't seem to care much about God.

Though repetitive at times and certainly verbose, this was an engaging, riveting, and entertaining romp through Medieval England politics, religion, and every day life. I was absolutely invested in the characters lives, major and minor alike. Quite simply, I couldn't put it down. Others have said it better, so I'll just say read it. You will enjoy every page.
