I watched this movie on DVD years ago with my kids. When I found out it was based on a book, I was excited! Post-apocalyptic, isolated, walled cities are my schtick - bring it on!
Unfortunately, this is not an all-ages book; it is solidly aimed at children. I am not the intended audience. I'll encourage my 11 year old to read it, however.

YA sci-fi. If you’ve read anything, ever, you will pretty much know everything that’s going to happen in this book, but it’s still well-told and engaging. I liked the main characters, spritely Lina and the unfortunately named Doon, and I liked some of the smaller details about the City of Ember. I actually really want to see the movie now, to see that vast darkness and flickering light made real. I will also be looking for the sequel.

I like this book so far and I'm not a big sci-fi/fantasy fan. I loved this book! I am not a sci-fi/fantasy fan, but I just checked out the second book and am eagerly reading it now. I'm excited to finish the series (I think there are 2 more) and I'll definitely be recommending it to teens.
