Very good, disturbing book geared to teens. It tells the story of Matt, who was "harvested" in a country called Opium. Opium is part of a swath of land in which poppies are grown and drugs produced under the protection of a treaty between the US and what used to be Mexico. Almost all the work in Opium is done by eejits, humans who have had their minds surgically altered until they can only follow simple directions. A critic's favorite, this young adult novel did not do it for me. The world building was excellent. But the character development was not.
Set in a near future, Opium is the country that lies between the US and Mexico. It is controlled only by drug lords and its existence is sanctioned by both of its neighboring countries on the condition that the drugs produced there are sold across the ocean in Europe and Asia. Opium is run by a 143-year old drug lord, El Patron, whose lo ...more

Young-adult dystopia done totally right, which was so refreshing after the horrible Delirium. Matteo is a clone in a fictionalized Mexico and as he grows up he learns what it means to be human. So compelling and difficult to put down. Highly recommended for older teens and adults who are fans of the genre. (I really hope there's not a sequel.)
