One more reason to love my Nook...the ability to get a free preview/sample. And not just a little one either. I don't know what the average page-count for a sample is, but for The Way of Kings it was 196 pages!
I was more than hesitant to purchase a full copy of this book. Sanderson's work is hit-or-miss for me. I enjoyed the Mistborn trilogy, Elantris was okay, and Warbreaker...well...sucked. Shelling out a chunk of change for a 1,000 page behemoth that many reviewers say could have used a bit/a ...more

I admit freely and honestly that I am a dork.....a nerd.......and yes I may have been guilty in High school of playing a game of D&D or two, possibly 10 or 20 but who can remember who had the most powerful cleric so many years after the fact, but, I digress.
As many a dork/geek/nerd will tell you finding a good Epic fantasy is hard to do. Many have just become regurgitated plots from books of yore. One gets tired fairly quickly when every book has an orphaned "diamond in the rough"type stumbling ...more

Sanderson is a good storyteller, and I love fantasy where each chapter is from another character's perspective. This is definitely too long and has too much battle in it for my taste, but I must say that I am interested in reading the next book--when I am next ready to carry a 1000+ book around (in other words, interested but not compelled to pick it up right away).

And let me tell you I don't think there's anything unusual for Brandon Sanderson to get a five star review, but in all seriousness this book really gets all. the.stars. This book is a master class in how to write an epic fantasy adventure. And in that last hundred pages that hits that came on coming?!?! Revel ...more

One of the best fantasy books I’ve ever read
Solid writing— characters act according to their nature, pacing is excellent, plot unfolds naturally — and as a bonus the world has multiple cultures and the source of the different cultures is hinted at. “Facts” from history are appropriately distorted and the whole mythology and world building is top notch. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series ASAP.

Tok a god long while to get into, but once I understood the world better, I couldn't put it down. I still don't really have a clue what is going on in the arc of the story, but I can't wait for the next book.

It took a couple hundred pages for this to really click with me, but once it did I was hooked! Sanderson has created an interesting fantasy world with a strange climate, strange flora and fauna, strange gender dynamics, and yet everything fits together in a believable and consistent way. Supposedly this is the first in a ten-book series. I'm excited to read the next one! (But first I'm going to read some shorter things.)
