A delightful old-fashioned adventure. Reminded me of an E. Nesbit book! Both the feel of family drama as well as magic, I'm shocked that I haven't read Edward Eager before now. As a kid I would have been all over this book! As an adult I'm excited to read more!

When I was about 11 or 12, I discovered an author who wrote light, easy books about ordinary kids having magical adventures. It seemed to me that there were a whole lot of them and I just kept going back to the library and finding another. Then I finished them and moved on to meatier books like the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper. As an adult I vaguely remembered the books and the comfort they gave me, but no amount of googling “real children magical adventure” would bring them up. Then

Consciously E.-Nesbit-y, in an excellent way.

Edward Eager's books were stories I loved as a child and having re-read them as an adult I still quite enjoy them. The stories and characters hold up to the test of time. These books are clever and intriguing and the characters are very endearing.

Adam loved this one! It's quite old fashioned, but the children are very clever in a way that feels kind of modern. Good stuff.
