Fantasy. Wikipedia is quick to point out that this book was "marketed to adults." I expected a little bit of romance, or maybe some salty language. What I got was the gruesome death of several characters, including three children, a passing reference to an orgy in a stairwell, and a plot that's more tangled than usual.

Need a good book after all the not so good ones i've been reading
Finished and looking forward to re-reading it again in a couple of month, love this book! If you haven't read this book and reading this review, then i would recommend reading it, its dwj at her best, though i still have other dwj favorites with million stars, this is really, really good! ...more

[2006 review.] My tear through everything DWJ ever wrote continues. A friend who works at Tor gave this to me, and it's definitely in the high-middle of the pack, as far as what I've read of hers so far. Her favorite tropes are getting easier to pick out, and this has similarities to the Chrestomanci books as well as Homewardbounders and even Hexwood, but it's a little more adult than most of her books. It took me a minute to get into this one but once Maree was introduced and it started to alternate between Rupert and Maree, it really took off.
I love the comedic way the perspective of Rupert and Maree play off one-another, especially at first. The introduction to Maree from Rupert and then getting the same scene from Maree's perspective was great.
