This book grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Unstable single mom drives to the mall and has the kids stay in the car. The mall closes, and she is nowhere to be found. The kids know that if they go to the police, they will be split up into separate foster care. So, I knew people who were obsessed with these books when I was younger. Homecoming and Dicey's Song were held up there with Judy Blume's books as being THE books for young girls . . . and somehow I never read them. I dunno . . . the old covers just weren't that appealing. And the weird thing is, I've read and loved almost every other book by Cynthia Voigt. Jackaroo? Great story of determination, family and survival. I can see why it is a Newbery Medal Winner. I can also see why it is YA though. It's so happy. I mean not all the things that happen to the family are happy but nothing really bad happens. I feel like there should be some life lessons about 4 children out on the road of life on their own and that very horrible things that can happen. This family gets through it all without things getting too ugly. Sure....it's horrible and hard and heartbreaking ...more

I re-read this after cleaning out my bedroom at my parents' house. The story is very engaging, with good character development. But as an adult who is not very in touch with teens, I wondered how it would come across to its intended audience, given how frightening the situation is. The Tillermans' mother abandoned them in a supermarket parking lot because she couldn't take care of them. (why not at least leave them closer to their aunt's house?)
