This book grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Unstable single mom drives to the mall and has the kids stay in the car. The mall closes, and she is nowhere to be found. The Tillermans' mother abandoned them in a supermarket parking lot because she couldn't take care of them. (why not at least leave them closer to their aunt's house?) And it is mentioned multiple times - approvingly -
