Apparently it is romantic to be imprisoned underground by goblins and forced to bear their children. At least she had her self-centered sister to keep her company till the Stockholm Syndrome kicked in.

I’ve owned a copy of this book for nine years. Nine years! I’m so glad I finally read it — a book that manages to be thrilling, spooky, romantic and funny — all elements fitting together in an understated way. Will definitely be looking for the rest of the trilogy, though I’m disappointed they’re not on audio — Jenny Sterlin’s dry narration was perfect.

Wonderful book - in some ways reminiscent of Shadow Castle. It would be interesting to know if she read it growing up.

This was a really lovely fantasy. I can see why the author won the mythopeic award. Kate and her sister Emily come to live on an estate that now belongs to Kate after the death of their father, apparently there was no entail on the male line in this fantasy, set in 19th century Britain. Soon they meet goblins, strange menacing creature, and Their cousin who is their guardian seems reluctant to save them from the menacing magic of the monstrous looking goblins.
