Imaginative and surreal, this book somehow failed to capture my interest.
Candy Quackenbush is out on the Minnesota prairie when it transforms into a sea. She is drawn into the world of Abarat, and travels from one location to another, and sees lots of fantastic things. Too much journey, not enough story. I liked the colorful illustrations, though.
I lost track of the Abarat series a handful of years ago. I'm not sure why; even before I re-read it this month, I had fond memories of the story, and still had much of the imagery of the book in my mind. It's hard to get out of your mind the image of men with their mouths, noses, and eyes on insect legs that scuttle about their faces, and even disengage and chase after folks so that the men can keep up with their pursuit. I read these books again recently, and realized that I loved them even more this time. And I never appreciated the pictures as much as I do now. I wish I could think of the bizzarities that Clive Barker does. I recommend this to anyone- I don't care if it's YA.
