Really enjoyed this Whartonesque (with a dash of Dominick Dunne, perhaps) study of Katey Kontent, the daughter of Russian immigrants who breaks through to New York's moneyed class, often in spite of herself (Katey always seems to make noble choices, and I wonder if all are believable - several time she turns down a life of ease.). Towles is a gifted writer and I got a sense of both place and time. Well worth reading.

Not sure what it is about this book, but I was sucked in to its world immediately. I put aside chores and stayed up late finishing it. The writing is elegant. The dialogue unspools easily. The plot is interesting and sometimes surprising. I often marveled at how the author, a man, could write the main character's, a woman, voice so believably. And then there's the setting: how can one go wrong writing a love letter to NYC?
