Interesting twist on Beauty and the Beast. The beginning feels very "animated Disney movie, now for older teens" but about the halfway point it really descends into "real fairies are not cute, and they like to play with their food" which I love. I also was fascinated by the nature and terms of the curse, which was very unusual. Sarah is very good at setting up her fantasy worlds. I was fascinated, too, by a human world in which there was no religion because the fairies had come to town, wiped ou ...more

Not really Tamlin, not quite Beauty and the Beast either, this fantasy novel borrows from both of them, with some Psyche and Cupid thrown in toward the end. Feyre hunts to keep her family fed, and runs afoul of faerie law. To save her family, she must go live with the masked faerie Tamlin. Compelling enough that I'm curious to see where the series goes, but the characters don't quite have enough depth to make me feel like they're living, breathing people. There's a lot going on, which makes it easy to recommend to fantasy fans who like action and drama more than thoughtful characters and world-building. ...more

Sarah J. Maas writes the perfect "new adult" fantasy novel in my opinion. Her books are fast moving, her characters are engaging, and ger storylines draw you in and won't let you go until the last page. A Court of Thorns and Roses is my favorite series she writes. Her books will always be an immediate read for me no questions asked. ...more

This starts out as a well written but boring tale. Is the fairy realm fun? Yes! Is the story of a human falling in love with a fairy new or exciting? No but still fun. However, about 3/4s of the way through the book, it gets more exciting. Not only do we end up in a fight for your life kind of thing but we have some hard choices that are made that is worth talking about. No idea how the author is going to top that in future books - it feels like it's going to end up in a normal love triangle. Bu ...more

I kept going because I'm told people love the series and this is the worst of the books. I hope so! ...more

3.5, really, but I'm feeling generous.

This book was slickly written and quickly paced.

Listened to audio. Liked the idea of a beauty and the beast retelling. Don’t love the character enough to tolerate a million more books
