A refreshing change from the usual vampire/paranormal novels out there. This is a much darker and edgier vision, and very well-written. I'm sorry this is a stand-alone, because there's certainly much more to explore at the end of the story. Be forewarned: this book will leave you with a near-obsessive desire to get your hands on some fresh, homemade cinnamon rolls. I recommend reading in the vicinity of a Cinnabon or having an emergency stash of Pillsbury rolls in your fridge, just to tide you o ...more

Really gorgeous chemistry and world building. It was, if I may say it, “genre fiction” at its best: “urban fantasy” only in its elements. Dark, terrifying, and hopeful, without forced resolution or concretion. This was a book about people, written with tenderness and love.

A wonderfully realized world in which Others (vampires, weres, etc.) are real, with engaging characters. The story begins with Sunshine, chained up in a deserted mansion with an also chained up vampire, for whom she is dinner. Exciting and well written.

Reread in 2023 on audio. I didn't love the narrator, but I think I enjoyed the mood more the second time around. So much baking, and thinking, and angst. I still prefer her juv/YA books, but bumped this up a star. ...more
