I reread it to find certain scenes I remembered. I thought there was a recipe in here somewhere, but there's not much actual cooking info. There was a fair amount I had forgotten about. It still works well as a story, not much romance as it is very clear how inhuman the vampires are. This book could be the first in a series, but If it were it would become one of the many urban vampire series.
As it stands, do not expect a complete resolution of matters raised in the book, HEA, or even all the interpersonal conflicts and mysteries.
Expect instead excellent pacing, a realistic strong woman MC, a good mother and wonderful worldbuilding holding up a gorgeous plot, one that feels organic and plot hole free while still ending the main arc in a satisfying way. Would read mo ...more

McKinley ranks as a favorite, possibly, in a list constantly in flux, THE favorite author I have. Sunshine played with her voice and was clearly a strict attempt to defy classification as a young adult book. She definitely took it into the adult realm, but while I enjoyed the book as a whole I felt her attempts to go into sexual language were both awkward and unneeded.
