After devouring the first two books in this series, I decided to pause and read this collection of prequel novellas. I was looking forward to meeting Celaena before she was broken by the Endovier death camp, and finding out a bit more about her past. Celaena started out arrogant as always, but she does have good reason to be arrogant, and something about the combination of deadly assassin skills and her love for a frivolous and expensive wardrobe and other fineries makes her always fun and sligh ...more

This one was much better but it was hard to get involved because I knew what the ending was. I'm sort of surprised at how she hasn't figured out who the real bad guy is.

I liked that this is just a collection of short stories in a sense.

I don't like that she's supposed to be this amazing assassin but she keeps making random mistakes.

I also wonder why they didn't just move back to the desert..

Sarah J. Maas writes the perfect "new adult" fantasy novel in my opinion. Her books are fast moving, her characters are engaging, and ger storylines draw you in and won't let you go until the last page. Her books will always be an immediate read for me no questions asked. ...more

I really didn’t want to like these stories

But I did— toward the end of it, I was absolutely rooting for Caelena and wanted to know the rest of her story. Excellent hooks to get you into the Throne of Glass series.

I don't love short stories and novellas, but these do fill-in some blanks and serve as a reminder that Celaena is very much still a far-too-trusting child that has led a complicated life filled with a strange privilege and decadence. ...more

What I love about having these stories is how solidly they build Celaena's back-story and show her fully displaying her massive skill set. I particularly enjoy the setting of the Red Desert. And oh, Sam. I may have said this before, but really seeing that relationship, after getting snippets of it in Throne of Glass, my heart just goes out to her. She has lost more than her share, but uses that loss to forge ahead and remake herself for the future. I love that she is a character with that kind o ...more
