I really enjoyed this book, as I do all of Flanagan's works, but I felt that for the first in a new series, the formula seemed a little bit too familar. The main character, named Hal, is the son of a freed Arulean slave and his deceased Skandian warrior father. So not necessarily an orphan, but an outcast because of his Arulean blood. He is mentored by his father's one-time best friend, a one-armed man name Thorn who is gruff but lovable, wise, influential and a total bada$$ once upon a time. Ha

I think it is the five-star character interaction that made this an enjoyable read.
It does suffer from a flaw that seems common to many Juvenile/Young-Adult books. The adults, Especially the chief in this one, are morons. (Ok, it's not as bad as the Harry Potter books in this regard, but still annoying.) We are shown Hal developing into a responsible leader who takes responsibility for the failures of individuals in his Band, but the chief (view spoiler) ...more

Not quite as gripping and fall-instantly-in-love-with as the Ranger's Apprentice. But still a solid choice to sit down and enjoy!
