As soon as I finished reading, I came inside and starting telling Jesse about my friend Yale Tishman. About his victories and his losses. About the mid-1980s and how they turned his life about down. About the art -- I really loved reading about the art. I didn't have as much to say about my new friend, Fiona. I hate all that she went through, but I love that she was there for so many during their last days. If you haven't, seek out And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic.

A couple of years ago, a (not that much younger) colleague and I were discussing the state of AIDS research, which he lamented as disappointing due to the lack of either a cure or a vaccine after so many years of searching. I was shocked, and pointed out the long lives HIV+ people have now, the lack of AIDS hospice wards in big-city hospitals, and the absence of Kaposi's Sarcoma cases anywhere.
