this is a truly beautiful ARC, one of the nicest i've seen:

it's all textured and graphically pleasing and nice to touch and hold:

but the story didn't really meet my expectations.

i'm giving it a three, but it is a low three. it is an incredibly fast read, and if you are looking for something in that vein - a fast-paced page-turner mystery thing, this may well satisfy you. but be forewarned it is not a creepy book, or even remotely spooky, as the cover and epigraph seem to suggest:

My coworker brought this for me to borrow because this is a thing we do when one of us finishes something once in a while. It's a nice arrangement and I wind up reading things I might not otherwise read. In this case, there are so many books like this now that claim to be thrillers or whatever, and it's not always my thing. What happened ten years ago? Why was Nora even invited? As Nora attempts to recall the events leading to the murder, a twisting tale of revenge unfolds...

I whipped through the second half of this book in one afternoon. The unreliable narrator and gaps in memory reminded me a lot of The Girl on the Tr

4 stars in the category of Ruth Ware, I liked the woman in Cabin 10 but I enjoyed this one a lot more.

This book is predictable from the onset. The tension with Claire is obvious, the trauma with James equally obvious, the premise odd, and the faulty narrator cliche. AND YET I enjoyed every bit of the ride, just waiting to see how Ware was going to roll it all out. It was a quick read! Worth a few hours!

I don't think the other reviews do this one justice. I read it in one day and couldn't put it down. It did keep me guessing when usually I can figure mysteries out early on. Plus it creeped me out; I had to turn on my house alarm. ...more
