Mer's gift of being a water diviner hasn't exactly helped her in life: a branded prisoner of the prince, and now on the run from his guards. The only person she trusts is Renfrew, who trained her to fight, so when Renfrew says he needs her help to find a magical well to get back at the prince, she agrees. This had a lot of good bits, like the blending of Welsh mythology/legend with the action, but the characters were just flat. They started out interesting, but then... nothing. There was no growth, no change, no unplumbed depths, just who we met at their introduction. The action flashes forward and back, with action sequences punctuated by periods of boring exposition or just stopping (like at the Well itself). I'm glad this is a standalone.
