Whenever discussions of religion and science fiction come up, inevitably this book is mentioned. Considering that it was published in 1959, it is doing a lot of new and imaginative things with the post-apocalyptic genre. The story covers three different time periods in the future and getting to know the changes in characters and the world was difficult each time.

It's written as three novellas that take place in the same abbey, centuries apart. The monks try to make sense of the past, making clearly wrong assumptions. It's well done. Unlike much sci fi, it starts out slowly, then builds to a great ending. ...more

Just as good as I remember from reading it as a teenager. Anyone who thinks science fiction is not "literary" fiction should be handed this book. A thoughtful meditation on religion, faith, human nature, and the cyclical qualities of history. ...more
