Mexican Gothic was one of those books I was anticipating reading, like a kid going out on his first date. I'd heard a lot of good about it, and after having read Signal to Noise and falling in love with the characters there, it was hard not to go into the book with high expectations. That usually leaves me set up for some major disappointment, but I'm happy to say the book (mostly) lived up to my expectations.

Picked it up with some time on my hands and about halfway through I couldn't put it down - at 300 pages, I finished it in a day. It's atmospheric like a disturbing horror movie but I like the characters a lot better and the twist to finale flowed a lot better than those movies. It reminds me heavily of the movie Crimson Peak - the atmosphere is a near match but you'd have to flavor it with the disturbing creep of A Cure for Wellness.
