This didn't do much for me. Part of the draw is supposed to be the pseudo-Russian setting, which was fine, but our heroine didn't fit in with her setting at all. She acted and talked like a typical, snarky American teenager in a YA set in an American high school. I found it impossible to believe that a lowly, Russian peasant would be so instantly comfortable bantering with the nation's most powerful wizard, especially one with a murderous reputation. Enjoyable but nothing remarkable. You know you're tired of fantasy tropes when you actually hope the love interest will get killed off to liven things up. The Russian-inspired fantasy has some missteps that other reviews have pointed out, but that's probably the freshest thing about this. Still, one to recommend to less jaded readers.

This was a fun read - perfect for a confusing, stressful time in real life. The outlines are a typical Hero's Journey, but the characters, the rich (yet accessible) worldbuilding, and a couple unexpected turns make it rise above a cookie-cutter approach.
