I saw the movie, and while it wasn't a great film by any means, it was a view into such a different world, that I couldn't help but pick up the book. It was crack-lit, and I tore through it. I haven't spent much time in Asia, so was fascinating to learn more about Singapore and all the areas talked about. Nice romance story too.

Do people really live like this? Are people seriously THIS rich?!
I first was interested in this book because of the title. It's just so...wrong. Then once I saw the family tree and footnotes, I was sold. Each chapter drops us into the life of one of the colorful characters -- the smart, unprepared Rachel; the clueless about his wealth Nick; the stylish, wealthy Astrid; and a variety of other characters from old money and new. I saw the movie first and confess that I might have liked the movie better! But that's likely just a "saw it first" reaction. This is good fun in a very soap operatic sense, and an excellent, light "beach read" as well. My only issue with it is that I don't care one bit about any of the characters except Rachel. According to the blurbs on the inside front pages, Kirkus Reviews said of this book, "....Edith Wharton goes to Singapore..." and that's exactly what it reminds me of. Hm, kind of want t
