I saw the movie, and while it wasn't a great film by any means, it was a view into such a different world, that I couldn't help but pick up the book. It was crack-lit, and I tore through it. I haven't spent much time in Asia, so was fascinating to learn more about Singapore and all the areas talked about. Nice romance story too.

One hilarious piece is how racism exists everywhere, even in Asia - who knew the distinctions between Mainland Chinese, American Born Chinese (ABC), Hong Kong, Singapore.

Definitely an immersion into an unusual world. Also a page turner. I don't have much of a reference point for this book, but I really enjoyed it. ...more

Do people really live like this? Are people seriously THIS rich?!

I first was interested in this book because of the title. It's just so...wrong. Then once I saw the family tree and footnotes, I was sold. Each chapter drops us into the life of one of the colorful characters -- the smart, unprepared Rachel; the clueless about his wealth Nick; the stylish, wealthy Astrid; and a variety of other characters from old money and new. I listened to this book. Super entertaining and light.

The main thing for me were all the food descriptions. Omg! Makes me want to go back and visit Singapore......

Looking forward to this. I can't resist Singapore set fiction. Plus they're making a movie of it, yes! So I want to read it first. ...more

Started this 14 hour audiobook Wed and finished Sunday. I guess I was hooked. Good thing it’s a series!

Pretty funny sometimes. Good listen for a long car drive.

I saw the movie first and confess that I might have liked the movie better! But that's likely just a "saw it first" reaction. This is good fun in a very soap operatic sense, and an excellent, light "beach read" as well. My only issue with it is that I don't care one bit about any of the characters except Rachel. According to the blurbs on the inside front pages, Kirkus Reviews said of this book, "....Edith Wharton goes to Singapore..." and that's exactly what it reminds me of. Hm, kind of want t ...more

oh, I loved this, both for the story and for the narrative style, which almost gives you whiplash in how quickly it changes perspective, but it works so well for how gossipy and all about rumors and disingenuous communication it is.
