Lovely YA adventure in Carriger's SOULLESS world. It was fun to see some characters from her adult books as kids, and the series is off to a rollicking start. The underlying mystery of this book was a bit light, mostly so that she could introduce the finishing school and the cast of characters, and that was fine by me, because they were delightful. I'd really like to see her go a bit longer with the next one, this felt too short!

A modern retelling of Victorian England. In addition to the steampunk and supernatural creatures, Carriger makes the women agents of power with hidden networks; and the main character, an upper class maiden is able to make friends with a young black worker. The story caught my attention, with Sophronia being an engaging, active character. The voice (both the narrative and narrator) occasionally got to me with all its oohing over sparkly bits and proper clothing. But overall the reader did a good

A little slow getting into the style but a fun read. I didn't feel the book was quite long enough- I wanted a bit more to happen. The characters are great and there's a lot of promise for future installments. It kind of feels like a Harry Potter type book- very young hero entering a new boarding school with a host of great supporting characters and fun world building. I hope things become more complex and mature as the books go on.

I had read the print version of this book previously and thought it was a lot of fun, but if you've read some of my other reviews, you'll know that I'm a sucker for steampunk, so I might be biased. The audio version is maybe even more fun, since it's light, funny, cute and easy to listen to without having to give it 100% of your attention -- which is a problem I often have with denser audiobooks. The narrator was very good at keeping the light tone and has great voices -- I especially liked Dimi

A great listen on audio - the names are even funnier read aloud, plus you get fun accents and the humor comes to life.

I think I would have enjoyed this quite a bit if I had read it when I was closer to 14 - the age of the protaganist. As an adult, it was still interesting getting to know the world and what did and didn't exist in it. I applaud the young girl for exploring the ship, making friends, learning skills, and being innovative and crafty. I think I would have enjoyed attending this school.
