“But I have advanced eyelash fluttering to practice, and a mathematics problem concerning how to order strychnine and a lamb dinner on a limited budget, and three chapters on court etiquette to read, and my handkerchief to starch, and the quadrille to memorize!”
“No one said learning etiquette and espionage would be easy, my dear.”
This is such a FUN book!! Completely appropriate for the tween and early teen set (older teens are often too busy being deeply cynical to enjoy a silly romp like t ...more

Okay... that took like TWO WEEKS. I don't know... I guess that without a love story, my motivation to finish is just not as high... But also, I've just been watching a lot of TV lately. I FINALLY got around to starting Arrow! :) The book is really good though. I quite like Sophronia, and seeing the younger versions of many familiar characters from the Parasol Protectorate series!!! :)

Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is used to her mother's disapproval and punishments. Even the idle threats of being sent to live with vampires hold little sway when Sophronia is faced with a situation in which she can attempt something daring instead of being painfully, boringly proper.

This was the perfect thing to experience as an audiobook. Moira Quirk was the perfect narrator, with great accents and inflections without sounding like she was thinking very highly of her talent for doing it. And the story is a lot of fun, with plenty of ridiculous things and evocative steampunky descriptions. This being only my second foray into steampunk, I can't really speak for the originality of it all, but I liked it.

Sophronia is sent away to finishing school because her mother can't seem to tame her. She's far more interested in machines and adventures than fashion and accessories. But the school isn't quite normal and we learn about it along with Sophronia. We also get to meet the younger versions of characters we know from the Parasol Protecorate!

The "prequel" series to Carriger's Parasol Protectorage SHINES in its first outing. An absolute blast to read.
