Shelves: classics, audio

A friend and former colleague, (a retired English teacher) told me that this was a book to be "appreciated" rather than "liked."

She also warned that it gets tedious. I found it particularly so on audio. I found it difficult to like or appreciate it. When I read a book, I can think about what I'm reading at my own pace, without the narrator blowing through the next 3 paragraphs.

And I think I would appreciate, and maybe even enjoy this book, if I'd read it with others, and if I'd actually read it, ...more

I listened to this book on CD. It forced me to really listen to the story, which is really well written, but hard to hear. Fascinating book, if I had read it on paper, I probably would have missed half of the good stuff in it, skipping over it too fast. You can really feel like you are there, right beside the main character in the war. What is war like on a person's psyche? ...more

So the red badge of courage is just that the kid sat there and let himself get shot at while trying to kill people? And this is glorious? What the hell! Stupid war-glorifying schlock. Boring, over-long for what it does and lacking the chivalrous idealism to reinforce the author's views. ...more
