This was funny, and sad in a very British way. The novel is about the people staying at, or staffing a hotel. Many of these people are terrible. The prologue makes it clear that the hotel is about to be destroyed by a natural disaster, and that some of the people will survive. It soon becomes obvious that the disaster will clear the way for the survivors to go on to better lives.

There are many hilarious moments in this book.
