This was a fantastic book with a lot of things going for it. I gave it four stars instead of five because there were a couple of scenes that I thought were a bit melodramatic, but overall I enjoyed this book a lot.

On the basic level it is a senior citizen love story. Major Pettigrew, having lost his wife a few years ago and his brother just a day ago, is consoled by Mrs. Ali, a widow of Pakistani descent. If you are used to people jumping into bed moments after they meet, this is not the book fo

The writing is good and there are bits that sparkle through, but on the whole the major's character was too much of a pompus git for me to like him. And his an antagonists, including the selfish yuppy son, were too one dimensionally evil to be realistic. Amina was the only real character who was likeable, but then her short part in the story was reduced to a stereotypical sketch except for the one good touch (view spoiler). Otherwise ...more

An enjoyable read. I am no expert in British culture, but I think the topic of Anglo-Asian relations has been covered before in literature. Telling the story of interracial love from the perspective of two older lovers did seem fresh (although Jane Wyman probably thinks she did it better).

On the other hand, although the story doesn't end with all of its loose ends tied, enough things are wrapped up neatly enough to make it somewhat corny and unrealistic. More importantly, as much as I loved the

Really enjoyed this book about a stuffy British major who discovers what people and things are really important in his life. It addresses serious matters with humor as you learn what the major thinks about the people and events in his life. I laughed out loud frequently at the things he would say to himself. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys British humor as it's presented in the British comedies on PBS. ...more

Great little comedy of manners book for adults--a romance with issues.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand is peppered with painfully believable characters. I enjoyed reading the book very much, but at times it was difficult to keep reading because I was busy cringing. Although there were moments when the behavior of the characters seemed...so humiliatingly oblivious that it felt impossible, the characters never leapt out of the realm of possibility.

Despite the occassional "augh I can't watch this" moments (which never works as well with books as it does with movies)the

Very charming although parts of it made me squirmy.

Absolutely delightful book! I feared for it a couple of times because I felt Major Pettigrew was getting pushed around, but he kept finding his spine before it was too late. I loved both him and Mrs. Ali, and actually also Sandy, whom I wish we had seen more of. It was just plain sweet. A great comfort read.

It started out great; I was really loving it. Then it dragged a little in the middle with this whole party event they were planning. Overall, great characters. I liked it. Can def see it as a movie...

Charming adult romance (in the best sense of the word). I LOVED this sweet book and its very human and wounded characters trying to muddle through.
