Wow. No, really. Just…Wow. I had heard good things about Bishop’s book, but nothing I had heard or read prepared me for the book itself. Rich detail, fabulous characters, and a very compelling story come together in just the right way to create a dark and subtle magic.

I was hungry for a good SF/fantasy, and browsed my shelves for something old or new. This has been compared favorably to Mieville's Perdido Street Station. I simply loved the language. The story unfolds at a meandering pace...the setting and characters are so much more important than plot - the author has created a brilliant fever dream of a novel. one of those books that's delightfully hard to pin down into any one genre - we'd be calling it magical realism if it weren't for the fact that it takes place in an unreal country, the occasional grotesque could tip it ever so slightly into horror - earning it comparisons with the otherwise dissimilar 'dark tower' books.
