I was hungry for a good SF/fantasy, and browsed my shelves for something old or new. This has been compared favorably to Mieville's Perdido Street Station. I simply loved the language. The story unfolds at a meandering pace...the setting and characters are so much more important than plot - the author has created a brilliant fever dream of a novel. one of those books that's delightfully hard to pin down into any one genre - we'd be calling it magical realism if it weren't for the fact that it takes place in an unreal country, the occasional grotesque could tip it ever so slightly into horror - earning it comparisons with the otherwise dissimilar 'dark tower' books. Bishop's prose is lush and decorative, making this book highly recommended for those who love the crafting of worlds out of words. not all the story threads get neatly tied up,
