I'd almost forgotten what a well-told murder mystery could be like. Kate, not infallible, holds her own when things go wrong yet we still get to see her inner struggle to do the right thing in the face of her secret fears. The split between what we know about Kate and what the world knows about Kate adds tension to the circumstances of the investigation and creates a few hold-your-breath moments throughout the book.

I've really gotten into dark mysteries, and this fits the bill nicely (in other words, if you like cozies, stay away!).
We open with the internal monologue from the next victim of a brutal serial killer, and move quickly through her death to the start of the investigation of her murder. Turns out that there were a series of four similar murders 16 years ago, and the fear is that the killer has returned.

This was a book that kept me reading, but I knew who the killer was almost immediately, which took away from some of the enjoyment. I hate guessing whodunit. I could have done with fewer swear words too. As the wife of a cop, I realize that they use bad language around each other when they're working, but when I'm reading I don't want to see the f-bomb or g-damn it on every page!
