Heartbreaking look at an ignored part of history. While most books about the 1940's focus on the major events of WWII (which are vital and disturbing enough), this shows us what was happening to those who found disfavor with Stalin- that is, anyone educated, cultured, and not Russian enough.

In a word, wrenching. The description of lice crawling on eyelashes...eeeek, my head itches just thinking about it. Scratching aside, I can't say I *enjoyed* the book because it was brutal, but it was interesting to read a WWII story that involved persecution of non-Jews outside of Germany. I would have liked a bit more background, especially since it's a teen novel.
