A poignant look at how grieving affects a family already on the cusp of other big changes. I couldn't put this book down, it was delicately and honestly written. I loved and sympathized with Fern, Holden, and Sara, but had a little trouble with the mom and dad. I guess as a mom I'd like to think I would have better communication with my teenagers, and react less selfishly in a crisis.

Fern feels like the forgotten child, between her older siblings (Sara and Holden) and little brother Charlie, only brought out when her dad wants to use the family to advertise his restaurant, Harry's. One day she's worrying about crushing on her best friend Ran and how to escape the bullies on the bus, then the unspeakable happens and Fern knows it's all her fault. How can she ever go back to normal again?

But sometimes I'm just in the mood for a tear-jerker, so I picked it up and waited to see what would be so devastating.
