I was wary as I first started reading this book. Why do all books set in the south have to have a lonely young girl whose mama either died or skipped town to avoid an abusive daddy? Is it THAT common? But as I got more into the book, I realized that this was not the usual young-girl-having-dreams-squashed book. I started this book and instantly became drawn in by her writing style. I got about three chapters into it and was enjoying it very much, but was overwhelmed by the need to pass it along to a dear friend who, like the protagonist, lost her mom at an early age and was raised by a mean and boorish lout who did not appreciate her true inner beauty. I might get back to it later.

A motherless girl's coming of age in the South - as lush (and cloying) as honey, oozing with emotion, buzzing with female power, and stung with cliche and stereotypes.

I loved the characters in this books, and thought Sue Monk Kidd's eye for detail was excellent.
