At first this novel seemed to me to be like a female "Huck Finn" with the white girl and the black woman travelling around in what seems to be a random fashion, the mother gone and father abusive. But it turned into Lily's search for a mother, and although she found her mother in August and in Mary, she also found bits of her mother inside of herself.

This would be 3 and a half stars, but a nudge higher because it was a debut novel.
I wanted to drink a tall glass of lemonade and rock in a chair on a porch while reading this. The author took me so clearly to a time and a place that I felt like I was there with her.

It's a good book...I remember it being good when I read the first time. It isn't the greatest book I've ever read though. It's a typical coming-of-age story, reminds me a lot of (can you guess what I'm going to say?) To Kill a Mockingbird with a little bit of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Cold Sassy Tree thrown in for good measure. It's not a waste of time read though, I definitely like it.
