A time capsule project turns into much more when two inmates break out of the local prison. In letters, transcripts, poems, drawings, and newspaper articles, three middle schoolers - Nora, Lizzie, and new girl Elidee - deal with the event's effect on their community. Each of them has a stake in the breakout: Nora's father, who is the prison superintendent, Elidee's brother, who is an inmate, and Lizzie's grandmother, who works at the prison.
