As far as I gather from the end note, these "illustrations" are actually a selection of independent paintings, later put together with text. There are themes -- night, imagination, mystery -- but no story. Each image really stands on its own. Many of Gonsalves' paintings are lovely, especially the ones of the natural world, trees, sky, light and dark. His interior spaces and humans didn't always work quite as well for me.
