DANG IT HOW IS NAOMI NOVIK SO GOOD? Just when you think all the magic has been wrung out of the magic boarding school concept, along she comes with A Deadly Education to pull you back in again with a fabulously angry and potentially world-destroying heroine, full of sharp commentary on societal inequities and dealing with trauma and trying not to let your worst impulses get the better of you. It is a perfect book for this moment.

SO GREAT. I love being on a roll of deeply enjoyable books.
This reads like Harry Potter meets the Hunger Games with a hero who has Murderbot's snark and Maia's attempts to do good in a world that rewards horrible behavior.
l am thrilled I waited until book two is out so I can start it IMMEDIATELY.
Good: competence, teamwork, found family, world-building, values.
Not good: casual child murder, even if appropriate for plot/world building reasons.

2025 reread: Recommended this to someone, and bungl

People, pick this up. The pace is wonderful, the characters are bright, and the imagery is *fantastic*. She plops you right into the world and I could see it as I read - I lost some sleep to this one!

Premise: wizard kids are eaten by creatures at a high rate. There is a school where they are eaten at a slightly lower rate. This is *not* the same feel as Battle Royale or The Hunger Games - these kids aren't killing each other. Instead it's more survival but honestly that's the wonderful backdrop

incredibly good

This is the second time I’ve read this story. It remains tightly and amazingly written. Ends on a note (ha!) that makes you want the next book in your hands instantly. But even if you skipped induction and stopped there so as to make the waiting easier, excellent closure. Would strongly recommend.

This book started a little slow for me but once you’re fully immersed is this creepy and dangerous magic school and all the different characters it was a delight. Like and evil Hogwarts with more diversity and higher stakes.
