So happy I am rereading the Fudge books to the kids. They are astonishingly fresh and funny, and it's NOT because of the (fortunately rare) "modernizations" to the text in the Scholastic imprint. I remember being SO horrified by the sleepover game Sheila plays with her friends Mouse and the twins. On rereading, it is still pretty upsetting, but I appreciate much more the importance of the scene and how quickly and nicely the girls recover from their self-inflicted trauma/fight. This is a book that I had to start a few times before I got into it but then I wound up really liking it. There was this part where the girls in the book each wrote their secret thoughts about the others on a piece of paper and then passed it around. We actually did it at a sleepover and of course everyone wound up with hurt feelings just like in the book-too funny!
