I could not put this down. I literally spent all day on 12/30 just reading this. 400+ pages in one day, because I couldn't bear to part with it (thank you, Xmas/NYE vacation for giving me the slack to do it!).
This is hard to describe, and I want to avoid spoilers. I can say that it starts in a Dickensian setting, has a Gothic, crumbling mansion, a Victorian madhouse, a love story, and plenty of twists & turns. Even when I kind of knew where it was going, it was thrilling to see things play out! ...more

This was the perfect airplane read - gripping, tightly plotted, wonderfully flawed & morally conflicted characters, well-paced, and atmospheric. Did I mention tightly plotted? I was enjoying the first section but not particularly wowed, when I realized the second section involved a change of viewpoint and I was all "I'm sold!" The stifling Victorian setting made for an odd beach read (once I got off the plane and reached the beach) but it kept me hooked. Highly recommended if you like fat Victor

Fingersmith, Waters' second novel, is set in Victorian England. The focus of the novel initially is on Susan Trinder, who lives in the Borough section of London with a family of criminals. She agrees to work with Richard Rivers, a fraudulent "gentleman" looking for a wealthy wife, and travels to Buckinghamshire to pose as a lady's maid for Maud Lilly, the object of Mr. Rivers' intentions.
