This was the perfect airplane read - gripping, tightly plotted, wonderfully flawed & morally conflicted characters, well-paced, and atmospheric. Did I mention tightly plotted? I was enjoying the first section but not particularly wowed, when I realized the second section involved a change of viewpoint and I was all "I'm sold!" The stifling Victorian setting made for an odd beach read (once I got off the plane and reached the beach) but it kept me hooked. Highly recommended if you like fat Victor

My quick thoughts... maybe a proper review to follow...
- This book is described as having lots of plots twists. I went into it knowing next to nothing and don't generally think of myself as being particularly good at seeing the plot twists coming. However, I definitely predicted most of it. I do not actually think this a bad thing as I dislike twists that come out of nowhere. I don't want to feel like it's only a "twist" becaus ...more

A few too many tricks towards the end, but a good read.
