"Yet ANOTHER Troll-fighting 11-year old Orthodox Jewish girl" I really enjoyed the way that Deutsch integrated explanations of the daily life practices & rituals of Orthodox Judaism cleanly into the text. I also feel that there is a need for mainstream fiction where characters' faith is clearly integral to their lives and identities without being a major plot point. Definitely something I would rate 3.5 if I could. Cute, whimsical, and fun. Maybe lacking a little oomph at the end, and feeling a little unfinished. But the author's web site promises that a sequel is in the works. ...more

This was delightful. There were lessons, and morals, and adventure, and kids being actual kids, and this whole exotic-to-me interwoven culture that was adequately but not over explained.

I bought this from the author at GeekGirlCon. I was knitting during a panel on Star Wars, and after was talking with a bunch of other ladies who had also been knitting. One of them mentioned there was a graphic novel in the dealer's room about a Orthodox Jewish girl who gets into a knitting fight. I, of course, had to track this down.

I really wish this was a ten-star system; this was a 3.5, easy. It was simple, and slightly disjointed, which is why I won't give it a full four, but it was sweet and smart and funny, and I loved the slightly unreal neighborhood they live in--a modern, all-Orthodox town where kids walk to school through the woods every day and learn to knit but wear sneakers and have barbecues. ...more
