I liked this because it was beautifully written and very evocative of place, and I enjoyed how the understanding between Callie Vee and her grandfather developed. (It was funny when he toasted her as his only grandchild - it was clear that he couldn't keep the boys straight either). The brothers were a bit indignant at being forgotten, not realizing she had had to work at the relationship and they had not made that effort, perhaps because they did not see the appeal.

this book was really fun to read, and the characters were likeable. some of the "historical" stuff was interesting. towards the end i felt like the author had an agenda to convince the reader that if a girl is smart her potential is wasted in motherhood. that is why i did not give the book more stars. the message soured it for me at the end. ...more

Spunky, but within the tradition of the Little House and Caddie Woodlawn books. I like how much historical context there was, even though the author admitted to changing some things (I didn't notice) with regard to historical events and botanical detail. ...more

This book will be an excellent read aloud for my science class as it truly illustrates scientific inquiry. It is also a wonderful book about an interesting young woman learning about being a girl in the 19th century soon to be 20th. I would love to read it with kids.
