This is such a gorgeous book. The life of Francie Nolan, her brother, mother, and doomed father is so clearly written, so heartbreaking and beautiful and terrible at the same time, that even on a second reading I could not put the book down! I was fascinated to read the introduction to this edition as well, written by Anna Quindlen. Apparently, the first version of this book was a memoir, but Betty Smith's publisher basically told her no one would want to read a memoir like that, so she turned i

This book has hijacked my summer reading list and I am SO GLAD. I can't believe how insightful her writing is. How TIMELY. Every time I sit down with this book, I am bowled over again by a passage that could have been written yesterday, it is so full of immediate truth. I don't want to finish it, because then it will be over... alas... here I go...
