Hyman's illustrations are wonderful, as always. The stories selected are often relatively obscure ones, which was a great change from the famous few that get told over and over. The text is substantial and perfectly suitable for teens and adults as well as children. The volume is large and heavier than the standard picture book, so smaller children may find it a bit hard to hold on their own. ...more

Beautiful, earthy illustrations of fairy tales from around the world. Trina Schart Hyman has been my favorite illustrator all of my life, and I seek out her work, no matter where it is. To my glee, Hyman tends to pick fantastic projects.

I think I liked all of these stories, but I was disappointed that one of them, which started out with the woman's cleverness, had to rely on some magical charm for her to come out on top.

I think I like the Dark Patrick stories by Padraic Colum better for cleverness.
