This was Jemisin's debut, and it's wonderfully ambitious, full of big ideas about morality, divinity, humanity, politics, and magic. I keep imagining her editor, dressed like Cecil B. DeMille, reading it and then saying around their cigar, "Kid, you got Stuff."
I had been looking for something of hers to read, since I haven't read anything, and saw that this was the first in a series. I kind of wish I had read one of her later books instead, though, because I didn't really fall in love with this ...more

More like 3.5. Clever and interesting dealing with difficult themes and material, without being at all didactic. I didn't think the ending was entirely satisyfing, though. And somehow I didn't feel surprised.

At first this book was slow going for me. It is pretty bleak. But the world of the book is amazing and layered, the idea of captive gods was intriguing and I loved the strong heroine of color. In the end, I've been thinking about this book ever since I put it down and I look forward to reading the sequel.
