This lovely book has a frame story of a fairy tale in which a young man offers to help three enchanted princesses, in return they give him an enchanted harmonica in which their spirits have entered. The novel then follows the lives of the people who acquire the harmonica. The frame story indicates that when the harmonica has saved a life the princesses will be free. The first person to acquire the harmonica is a young man Frederich, who lives in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power (1933). Fred ...more

On the long side, but it moves quickly. Told in 3 stories, plus a slightly magical framing story, each story ends on a cliffhanger. The resolution is happy and a bit magical - the tragedies lie in the heartbreak in each story, not in the ending. Complex themes that don't get in the way of simply enjoying the stories, lovely use of music. One of the best of the this year's children's fiction, I think. ...more
