A thought-provoking and gorgeous book, ECHO is a series of interconnected stories, held together by the golden thread of music in the form of a very special harmonica. I had heard rave reviews from friends who got advance copies of this, and the raves continued throughout the year. I really need to get on the ball more when booksellers start raving about books a year in advance, because this was amazing. I would recommend this not just for kids and adults, but as a classroom read, because of the ...more

In this tale, which is part-fable and part-historical fiction (with a fair amount of magical realism), several young people are joined together by a harmonica which helps them to survive dark times--Nazi Germany, Depression-era America, World War II.

In Germany, Friedrich, his father, and his uncle find themselves in the crosshairs of the newly-risen Nazi regime, and must find a way for each to escape on their own yet be reunited in another country. In Depression-Era Pennsylvania, Mike struggles

Beautiful historical middle grade fiction. This would be so great to read in a classroom, so many topics you can discuss with each character. I loved that it was stories within stories, threads woven with each character that all get brought together in the end, just for the reader.

I listened to this as an audiobook, and would highly recommend it. The story revolves around music, and while I often find music in audiobooks cheesy, the use of piano, harmonica, and singing worked really well for th

Outstanding. Three stories of children striving to grow and survive in dark times, linked by their love of music and a mysterious harmonica. The whole is framed by a fairytale, which tells us the magical origins of the harmonica. Although the children struggle, the book is filled with hope and forgiveness, and the conviction that most people are decent, if we can get past our fears and prejudices.
