Managed to read this aloud to the kids without crying! Reading it for the first time in many years, I realized what an interesting book it is. It's a biography of Buddha, hung within the framework of the story of the artist and his little cat, and as such is both touching, interesting, and informative. The kids really liked it, too.

A little too sweet for my tastes. Made me think of the drastic difference between this book and the first book to win the Newbery Award.
