Shelves: fairy-tale, picture
I can't tell for certain whether I had this book as a child. The illustrations seemed awfully familiar, but the story itself, which is substantially different from the "standard" East of the Sun, does not, although it incorporates a number of elements from stories I do know, including The Frog Prince and whatever that one is called where the girl must get healing water for a parent. ...more

Given the quality of the illustrations, it's a shame that the story strayed so far from the original. An unwary reader (me) who expected the familiar, much-loved elements (ie the polar bear) that make up this variant of the Cupid and Psyche story would be sorely disappointed (I was). A unicorn and a frog... What benighted fairy tale did I stray into? Whatever it was, it was barely recognisable as 'East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon.' I dread to think what would happen to a child who read this ...more
