Maud is a not-so-well-behaved orphan. In 1909 two elderly sisters come to the orphanage looking for a little girl to adopt. They choose Maud, not for her looks, manners, or virtues, but because she is small for her age and can sing. Maud thought she was saved from the Barbary Asylum for Orphans when she was adopted by the wealthy Hawthorne sisters. But their are neither as kind or wealthy as they first seem and Maud is drawn in to their shady dealings as fraudlent mediums who pray on distraught rich people through their sham seances. Fabulous characters, wonderful story. Great one to pair with Avi's Seer of Shadows for an extended look at the spiritulism craze in America.
