Solid! Gave me that joyful, satisfied feeling I had reading fantasy as a kid, but not at all dated. Strong characters, well-realized setting (I had a few questions about some aspects, but these were omissions rather than implausibilities), well-constructed plot.

I hope there's a sequel! I was actually expecting, as we neared the end and the larger plot (that is, Titus's plot against the Bane) didn't seem to have gotten much forwarder, that it was going to be a cliff-hanger, but no! All the immedi

This was such a cool book! There were so many things that I really enjoyed about it, and I would thoroughly encourage others to check it out. It had such an interesting mix of fantasy worlds and historical fiction, the characters were great and I'm excited to learn more about them in future books. The instant attraction sat weirdly with me after I realized it was YA--maybe because it did not come across as YA-like? Anyway, I really like Sherry Thomas's writing in general, so her work will always be readable to me, but I think she is way better at subtle drama, character development, and action than she is at the constant tension and drama that this series requires. None ...more

Iolanthe is desperate to save a potion at the last minute and tries one last wild method--calling a lightning strike. To her astonishment, she actually does so, thus revealing herself to be an elemental mage of much greater power than she ever suspected. The lightning strike also instantaneously calls the attention of agents of the conquering nation of Atlantis. Iolanthe's guardian shoves her in a teleporting trunk just in the nick of time and bam, Iolanthe is on the run from Atlantis for the re ...more

A fun blend of Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci books and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Even though it's the first of a trilogy it stands alone, thankfully. An absorbing read with only a few missteps--I found the few romantic moments to be clunky. ...more
