Solid! Gave me that joyful, satisfied feeling I had reading fantasy as a kid, but not at all dated. Strong characters, well-realized setting (I had a few questions about some aspects, but these were omissions rather than implausibilities), well-constructed plot.
I hope there's a sequel! I was actually expecting, as we neared the end and the larger plot (that is, Titus's plot against the Bane) didn't seem to have gotten much forwarder, that it was going to be a cliff-hanger, but no! All the immedi ...more

The lightning strike also instantaneously calls the attention of agents of the conquering nation of Atlantis. Iolanthe's guardian shoves her in a teleporting trunk just in the nick of time and bam, Iolanthe is on the run from Atlantis for the re

Lively and realistic characters and good world building. The plot moved nicely and didn't feel overdone. Great magical fantasy.

A fun blend of Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci books and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Even though it's the first of a trilogy it stands alone, thankfully. An absorbing read with only a few missteps--I found the few romantic moments to be clunky.
